George J. Mitchell Scholars Announced For 2006-2007
January 13, 2006
An adopted Korean orphan who grew up in Minnesota and is one of America's top undergraduate scientists; an elected city council member from Ohio; and a young political activist in California who managed his mother's successful school board election campaign are among the twelve new George J. Mitchell Scholars selected for a year of post-graduate study at universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Launched in 1998, the Mitchell Scholarship recognizes outstanding young Americans who exhibit the highest standards of academic excellence, leadership and community service. The Scholarship, administered by the US-Ireland Alliance, a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, is named in honor of the pivotal role played by the former U.S. Senator from Maine in the Northern Ireland peace process. The Mitchell Scholarship program seeks to link future American leaders with the island of Ireland.
