Class of '04 Arrives in Dublin
October 08, 2003
On 1 October, the Class of '04 Mitchell Scholars arrived in Dublin to kick off their year. A reception was hosted by corporate sponsor Diageo. The company's Gravity Bar, atop the Guinness Storehouse, was fantastic venue for this first opportunity for friends of the Mitchell Scholars program to come together to meet the new Scholars. The reception was followed by a dinner hosted by Alliance board member Gerry McCrory. The Scholars met with the Taioseach at Government Buildings, toured Kilmainham Jail and visited Turlough Hill, an ESB plant in Wicklow. John McManus gave a tour of this interesting engineering feat. Many thanks to Padraig McManus and everyone at ESB for making this possible. The Scholars spent the afternoon and night at the nearby Tulfarris Hotel. The magnificent lakeside setting was a great place to golf, play tennis, swim, and generally relax! On Saturday, Philip Lee led the group on the Sphinx hike above Glendalough. Thanks also to everyone at Powerscourt for the enjoyable day spent in this lovely house and gardens. The Scholars were delighted to have Mark Ein -- a member of the selection committee that chose the Scholars -- join them in Ireland for these few days.
