George Mitchell Scholars' Weekend Visit to University of Ulster
May 24, 2003
The University of Ulster welcomed the Mitchell Scholars in a delightful spring weekend visit to Coleraine, Derry and scenic highlights of Northern Ireland. The highlight was a reception honoring the Scholars at Knocktama, the residence of University Vice Chancellor and President PG McKenna. Among the distinguished Northern Ireland guests attending the event were Nobel Laureate John Hume and Dr. Olive Church, the Mayor of Coleraine. During the weekend, the Scholars also toured the Northern Ireland coast and stopped at the legendary Bushmills Distillery to sample their products. In Derry, the Scholars had a fascinating and instructive tour of the city with Professor Tom Fraser, the Provost of the University's McGee campus. The Scholars are very grateful to Professor McKenna for the hospitality and to Debbie Caulfield, who engineered the arrangements and logistics for the weekend.
