John Gardiner - Advisory Board
John L. Gardiner is a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He represents clients in commercial disputes in both federal and state courts in the United States, as well as before international and domestic arbitral tribunals such as the International Chamber of Commerce and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution. John also has acted as an arbitrator in complex international corporate disputes under the ICC, ICDR and UNCITRAL rules, and has acted as a mediator in complicated corporate and partnership separation situations. He also has participated as counsel in many successful mediations and expert proceedings both internationally and domestically. John, who is co-head of Skadden’s International Litigation and Arbitration Group, was selected for inclusion as one of the best lawyers in the field of international arbitration by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2006-2007 and Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2005-2008, and also was listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2008.
Among the varied cases Mr. Gardiner has handled, a great number have involved allegations of fraud, breach of contract, theft of trade secrets and other related matters. John has litigated such cases both as plaintiff’s counsel and as defendant’s counsel. Clients he has represented include Citigroup Inc., Salomon Smith Barney Inc., Enron Corp., Deloitte & Touche LLP, Elektrim S.A., Laser Industries Limited, Hoechst A.G., and representatives of the estate of Dr. Arthur M. Sackler, among others. From an industry perspective, John has represented clients in auditing and accounting disputes, energy and project finance litigation and arbitration, and telecommunications and securities matters.
John has advised clients in many complicated corporate litigations, including takeover contests and related shareholder litigation, and also has participated as defense counsel in various class actions involving alleged violations of the federal securities laws. He also has represented clients in investigations before the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
In addition to his general corporate litigation experience, he has handled multimillion-dollar disputes before the Surrogate Courts of New York. John is co-chair of the Practising Law Institute panel on Current Developments in Federal Civil Practice, a member of United States Council for International Business and a past member of the Council on Judicial Administration of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He speaks frequently at seminars on a variety of litigation and international arbitration topics. He obtained his law degree from University College Dublin.
