Annual Mitchell Scholars' Gathering in Chevy Chase
August 1, 2011: Mary Lou Hartman and Cliff Sloan hosted the annual Mitchell Scholar gathering at their home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The event is an opportunity for Mitchell alums to reconnect, for the new Mitchells -- those about to head off for Ireland and Northern Ireland -- to meet and learn from previous Scholars; and for the Mitchells to meet many people in the Washington, D.C. area involved in politics, law and journalism.
In addition to the Mitchells, among the more than 100 people in attendance were Mike Abramowitz, former White House correspondent for the Washington Post and now the head of the Committee on Conscience at the Holocaust Museum; Meredith Fuchs, the Principal Deputy Counsel for the new Consumer Protection Bureau; Joan Biskupic, author of a recent biography on Supreme Court Justice Scalia; Judge Merrick Garland of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia; Emmy and Peabody Award-winning documentary-maker, Susan Koch; Jon Leibowitz, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission; Adam Liptak, Supreme Court correspondent for the New York Times; Ruth Marcus, columnist for the Washington Post; Joe Onek, the former Senior Counsel to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi; Sherrese Smith, Senior Counsel to the Chairman of the FCC; and Neera Tanden, one of the founders of Center for American Progress. We’re extremely grateful to all those who take time out of their busy schedules to meet and encourage the Mitchells!
