About George J. Mitchell Scholarship
Funding for Mitchell Scholarship
The Department of State intended to eliminate all funding for the George J. Mitchell Scholarship program. Thanks to supporters on Capitol Hill, including 28 Members of the House of Representatives who urged a reversal of the Department of State's decision (read that letter here), as well as the nearly 1200 people who have signed our petition to date, and those who have written letters, articles and opinion pieces, the State Department has reversed its decision to eliminate funding.
We welcome this decision. While discussions continue on the exact amount of money, State has committed to a 'floor' which allows us to commit to the fall 2012 competition to select a class of Mitchell Scholars for the 2013-2014 academic year.
But we are still asking those who have not yet registered their support, to do so by signing our original petition, and encourage others to do so as well.
