Irish Photographer John Minihan will shoot at Oscar Wilde
We are delighted that renowned Irish photographer John Minihan will participate in “Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film.” John, known for his photos of Princess Diana, Samuel Beckett, Francis Bacon, Ray Charles, and so many others, will be taking black and white photos of our guests on his Rolleiflex camera.
We first met John when there was an exhibition of his photography at Kildare Village. The Village’s Brian Kitson had invited the Mitchell Scholars to see the exhibition and meet with John. Kildare Village is sponsoring John’s involvement in the Oscar Wilde event.
John Minihan was born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he moved to London and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown to record the people and their daily lives.
His photos include the iconic snap of a 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery she worked at, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt.
Over the years John developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. William Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". His friendship with Beckett produced some of the most remarkable photographs ever taken of the writer. Among his subjects have been Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, William Trevor, Edna O'Brien, Maeve Binchy, Neil Jordan, Andy Warhol and the Who.
