All letters of reference, including the institutional endorsement, and supporting materials must be submitted online. To begin an application, use the online application option in the left nav bar.
General information about the program is available on this website. You will also find answers to regularly asked questions in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section.
Application Overview
Candidates are required to provide five letters of reference, proof of US citizenship (passport/birth certificate), academic transcripts, completed online application, and a carefully-considered, well-written 1000-word personal essay. In addition, those candidates who are full-time students at the time of application (all full-time undergraduate, graduate, or professional students are considered enrolled) must obtain an institutional endorsement; three of the five letters of reference must come from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work (courses or research). Those who are not full-time students at the time of application are not required to present an institutional endorsement. For these candidates, of the five letters of reference required, only two must be from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work. However, they may also have an endorsement [sixth] letter submitted by their undergraduate institution.
Please use the "find an advisor" tool in this site to see if your campus representative has posted contact info and campus deadline. Not all campus officials have registered in this listing; absence of your institution in this list does not mean you cannot apply. It simply means your campus official has not registered in this listing. Please urge that person to do so.
It is important that candidates spend sufficient time examining the various programs at the universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland in order to determine the courses in which they are most interested and for which they are qualified. Information about higher education in Ireland and Northern Ireland can also be found on our site.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that the institutional endorsement and letters of recommendation are received by the Mitchell Scholars Program by the national deadline at 11:59pm Eastern Time, Tuesday, 4 October 2011. No exceptions will be made for late applications, including letters and supporting materials. Only applications that are fully complete by the national deadline will be considered.
